PVC Shrink Sleeves and Labels: What Buyers Must Specify

PVC shrink sleeves can provide wraparound decoration, identification or a visible opening feature on a container, but a sleeve cannot be specified from artwork alone. Film behaviour, container geometry, lay-flat width, seam, cut length, printing distortion and application conditions work as one system. Buyers should provide the physical container and packing-line information before approving a sleeve or label for production.

First define what the sleeve must do

“Shrink sleeve” can refer to several formats. A full-body label covers much of a bottle or container and may carry extensive graphics. A partial-body sleeve covers a selected panel. A neck band sits around a cap or closure and may be designed to show that the pack has been opened. These formats require different dimensions, artwork layouts and application methods.

Do not describe a neck band as tamper proof without a defined pack design and validation. Tamper evidence is a property of the completed container, closure, sleeve, perforation and opening action. If it is a regulated or contractual requirement, state the test and acceptance criteria explicitly.

Measure the container, not only the current label

Maximum circumference and profile

Measure the container at its widest point and record shoulders, recesses, handles, caps, bases and abrupt changes in diameter. Provide a dimensioned drawing and representative samples in the condition in which they will be sleeved.

Lay-flat width and application clearance

Lay-flat width is the width of the flattened tube, not the circumference of the finished container. The converter normally develops it from container dimensions, film behaviour, seam construction and the clearance needed to place the sleeve. Too little clearance can stop application; too much can cause movement or an uneven final position. Do not copy a competitor’s lay-flat measurement unless the container and process are demonstrably identical.

Cut length and coverage limits

Define where the sleeve begins and ends after shrinking. Keep it clear of threads, dispensing surfaces, date-code areas and functional features. State whether it will be supplied as cut pieces, a continuous seamed roll or another format. Roll direction, core, diameter and registration marks matter for automatic application.

Plan artwork for shrink distortion

A flat graphic does not remain geometrically unchanged when film conforms to a contoured pack. Areas around shoulders, waists and bases may shrink more than straight sidewalls. The artwork may need controlled pre-distortion based on the container, sleeve orientation and film response. Keep critical copy, faces, logos and fine detail away from severe distortion zones until a tested layout is available.

For barcodes, specify the code type, data, size, orientation and scanning requirement, then verify the shrunk code on the actual pack. Small type and statutory wording also need approval at final size. PBK’s plastic packaging printing guide provides a useful artwork checklist.

Seam, perforation and print orientation

A shrink sleeve is normally formed into a tube with a longitudinal seam. Mark the seam position relative to the container and artwork so it does not obscure essential copy or interfere with application. Confirm whether printing is surface or reverse, which side is viewed, and the required unwind or feed direction.

If a tear feature is required, specify perforation position, length, direction and expected opening behaviour. Perforation can influence handling before application as well as opening after shrinking. Approve it on filled production-representative packs rather than assessing an empty container only.

Match the sleeve to the heat application process

State whether heat is applied by tunnel, controlled hot air, steam or another process, together with line speed and relevant equipment limits. Heat distribution, dwell time, airflow and container resistance affect the final appearance. A sleeve that works on one line may need different settings or construction on another.

Record wrinkles, edge distortion, panel shift, trapped air, seam movement or incomplete shrink during trials. Retain the approved container, sleeve specification and line settings for repeat production.

PVC, alternative films and buyer requirements

PVC is one shrink-film family; alternatives also exist. Selection depends on shrink curve, container shape, printing, equipment, customer policy and destination-market requirements. Disclose material restrictions, recycling-design rules and regulatory criteria. For sensitive applications, provide required declarations or tests; a generic material name is not evidence of suitability.

How sleeve converting differs from ordinary plastic bags manufacturing

PVC shrink-sleeve production involves film specification, printing, seaming, inspection and finishing. It differs from ordinary plastic bags manufacturing, although both are flexible packaging. A polybags or polythene supplier may use different production routes for the two. Ask who controls artwork, film, seam, perforation and trials.

Frequently asked questions

What is lay-flat width on a shrink sleeve?

It is the width of the tube when flattened. It is developed from container geometry, application clearance, seam and film behaviour; it is not simply the container’s widest visible face.

Does the artwork need to be distorted before printing?

Often, contoured containers require planned pre-distortion so graphics look correct after shrinking. The required adjustment should be based on the actual container, film, sleeve position and application trial.

Can a PVC sleeve be called tamper evident?

Only when the completed container, closure, sleeve and opening feature have been designed and validated for a defined tamper-evidence requirement. The film name alone does not establish that performance.

Should I send an empty or filled container sample?

Send both when filling, capping, temperature or internal pressure can affect the container. Samples should represent normal production tolerances and the condition at the sleeving stage.

What should be approved before a production order?

Approve the container version, film, thickness, dimensions, seam, perforation, artwork, colours, barcode, orientation, supply format, application trial result, inspection criteria, quantity and packing instructions.
