Gravure and flexographic printing can both produce branded flexible packaging, but they use different image carriers, press systems and setup workflows. The right choice is not determined by which process sounds more premium. It depends on the film or laminate, artwork, colour target, repeat length, order pattern, finishing operations and total programme volume. Buyers get a more useful recommendation when they provide those facts before asking for a printing rate.

How flexographic printing works

Flexo transfers ink from a metering roll to raised areas on a flexible plate and then to the moving web. It is widely associated with printed plastic bags, labels, paper and flexible packaging. For polyethylene film, surface condition and treatment need attention because ink must adhere to a low-energy substrate. Plate material, anilox selection, impression, drying and web tension also affect solids, fine type and registration.

Flexo may be commercially practical for many custom polybags, but buyers should not assume that every press can reproduce the same artwork or number of colours. How gravure printing works

Gravure uses microscopic recessed cells engraved into a metal cylinder. Ink fills those cells, excess ink is removed from the cylinder surface, and pressure transfers the image to the web. The engraved cylinder is specific to the design, colour separation and repeat. Cylinder preparation can be a substantial part of the setup decision, so artwork stability and expected repeat volume matter.

Gravure is frequently evaluated for detailed, repeatable graphics on flexible packaging and laminate webs. That does not make it the default answer for every branded bag. A short campaign, frequent design revisions or a simple one-colour mark may lead to different economics than a stable multi-SKU programme. Ask for tooling ownership, storage, amendment and replacement terms in writing.

Substrate and final construction

Identify every material layer and whether printing will be on the exposed surface or reverse printed within a laminate. A plain LDPE shopping bag, a coextruded courier bag and a PET/PE laminated pouch are different print projects. Film thickness, treatment, heat resistance, sealing window and lamination process can constrain ink and printing choices.

Artwork and colour expectations

Count spot and process colours correctly. Separate text, line art, solids, screens, photographs, white ink and special effects. Provide brand colour references and state how colour will be judged. A monitor preview is affected by screen calibration and cannot, by itself, define the acceptable result on transparent, white, metallised or coloured material.

Volume, repeat length and change frequency

Provide the quantity for the first order, expected annual quantity, number of designs and likely artwork life. Tooling cost should be assessed across the realistic programme rather than against one unit price. State the finished pack dimensions and machine repeat; seemingly small size changes may require different tooling or layout.

Conversion and filling requirements

Printing must align with seals, gussets, zippers, eye marks, tear notches and cut positions. For automated filling, confirm web width, unwind direction, core, maximum roll diameter, repeat tolerance and splice requirements. The converter and packer should agree on a dimensioned drawing before production.

Artwork and approval checklist

  • Editable vector artwork, linked images and outlined or supplied fonts
  • Finished dimensions, print repeat and bag or pouch orientation
  • Colour separations and approved brand colour references
  • Print side, surface or reverse-print instruction, and reading direction
  • Barcode type, size, quiet zone and target substrate
  • Regulatory copy controlled and approved by the buyer
  • Location of seals, gussets, zipper, perforation, eye mark and cut
  • Agreed proof type and method for approving colour and registration

Where printing sits in plastic bags manufacturing

Plastic bags manufacturing may include film extrusion or substrate sourcing, surface treatment, printing, curing or drying, lamination where required, slitting and bag conversion. Each stage can change dimensions or print position. The approved specification should therefore connect the graphic file to the material structure and finished pack—not treat artwork as an isolated purchase.

A meaningful comparison separates one-time tooling from recurring production and records substrate structure, thickness, colours, coverage, quantity, wastage policy, proofing, finishing, packing, tax and delivery terms.
